Lincoln Wastewater Pipe Lining

Lincoln Wastewater Pipe Lining

Client:
CORDE Limited (Principal: Selwyn District Council)
Location:
Lincoln, Southbridge, Lake Coleridge, Leeston and Selwyn Hutts.

March Cato Lining is continuing to provide pipe lining services via CORDE to Selwyn District Council as it upgrades Lincoln’s aging wastewater network to make sure it is fit for purpose for the rapidly growing township.

The rehabilitation by no dig methods for Lincoln includes lining approximately 3,000m of DN150 and 250m of DN225 wastewater pipelines (majority earthenware with some concrete) with Spiraline X; reinstating 120 LJRs, and the CIPP lining of 250m of DN100 mainlines (five mainlines) and 2,500m of DN100 laterals (approximately 150 lateral lines).

The first stage of works, completed at the end of September 2025, was undertaken within the Lincoln Town Centre on Gerald Street, West Belt, Maurice Street, Lyttelton Street, William Street, Robert Street and North Belt.

The following stage for Southbridge was completed at the end of December 2025. Remaining stages include Lake Coleridge (with expected completion in mid-March 2026), Leeston and Selwyn Hutts.

The majority of the pipelines (mainlines) are located in road reserve and the rest in private property (built up residential and commercial / industrial business areas), as well as footpaths, grassed berms.

The lengths of wastewater lines that were lined ranged in length from a minimum of 9m to a maximum of 175m, with depth to invert ranging from 1m to 4m. Based on the location of the manholes used for access, this involved working in approximately 35% of private properties, 5% of commercial properties and 60% in the road reserve.

March Cato Lining’s subcontract work scope includes:

  • The supply and operation of all plant, equipment and materials for pipe cleaning, large number of protrusions removed, unblocking and removing encrusted deposits, CCTV camera systems, the lining of agreed wastewater lines
  • Procurement of Spiraline X, LJRs and CIPP including installation
  • Preparation and work under our own site-specific Health and Safety, and Environmental Management Plans
  • Management of quality for the lining works through our own quality assurance system
  • Liaison with affected property owners / occupiers, and for access to private property etc
  • Regular / daily communications with the Main Contractor for any civils works and TTM requirements
  • Pre-lining investigative works (CCTV, cleaning / flushing), pipe condition assessment and reporting including advising on proposed rehabilitation methods undertaken
  • Provide CCTV to the NZGPIM4 requirements in a format suitable for upload to the Principal’s system on completion of contract
  • Regular liaison with progress updates to the Main Contractor’s representative.

Relevance

  •  Achieving Successful Outcomes: Lining gravity wastewater lines of the same diameter, and located in similar environments (private property, road reserve)
  • Collaborative Approach: The collaboration established between all parties (the Main Contractor, Principal and key March Cato Lining staff has contributed to the success of the subcontract works to date. This also included identifying and resolving issues / risks in advance of lining (such as some of the civil works required to provide access to the pipelines for the lining operations). In addition, this collaboration is driving efficiencies and effective delivery of critical works ahead of the contract timeframe and with minimal disruption to both operational flows and affected stakeholders
  • Advanced Rehabilitation Techniques: Implementing the use of SWL (as opposed to a CIPP or Form-and-Fold liners) while allowing the existing pipeline to remain operational (i.e. no temporary flow management or bypass pumping required or pump station shutdowns or involvement from Council’s Maintenance contractor)
  • Stakeholder and Traffic Management: Maintaining access for property owners / occupiers and businesses; or if access was temporarily unavailable, this was managed through early consultation and approved TTM measures
  • Maintaining traffic flows through major intersections without disruptions with TTM provided by CORDE.
